About Darwin

An evening out at the Darwin Ski ClubThe Northern Territory has many stories to tell, from its lush, tropical north through to its golden savannah and red, desert centre. It is home to the world’s oldest living culture and some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.

A dream destination for nature lovers, the Northern Territory boasts two national parks that are World Heritage-listed for both their environmental and cultural features – Kakadu and Uluru-Kata Tjuta. Both parks present unique landscapes and unparalleled opportunities to discover the ancient cultures of their indigenous caretakers.

The vibrant capital city Darwin is a bastion of multiculturalism, with residents from more than 60 nationalities and 70 different ethnic backgrounds. Combined with its tropical environment, the diverse influences of Darwin’s residents give the city an exotic edge.

Visit the atmospheric Mindil Beach Sunset Markets in the dry season for an assault on the senses – the sizzling aromas of enticing dishes from an array of cuisines, the sounds of didgeridoos and energetic drumming and the dazzling rays of the sun setting over the Arafura Sea. Markets are also held on the weekend throughout the year at Parap, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek and feature an array of fresh produce, food, clothing, jewellery and arts and crafts.

Climate

A storm over the harbour during the wet season.

Darwin has a tropical climate and the two seasons - the "Wet" and the "Dry" - are largely dictated by the monsoon cycle.

Arafura Games is held during the dry season when the conditions are ideal for outdoor competition. During May, the temperature averages 31°C (88 F) during the day with the average humidity around 43% in the afternoon, and 21°C (69F) during the night.

Due to our tropical climate it is important that you drink lots of water throughout the day and always prior, during and after sporting competition. Sun protection such as sunscreen and protective clothing is recommended in our tropical climate to protect your skin.
