In 1954, shortly after her coronation, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth and her husband His Royal Highness Prince Philip conducted their first official tour of Australia. Coinciding with a Surf Championships on Bondi Beach, the Queen and Prince Philip overstayed their visit to Bondi by 45 minutes just so they could watch the races!
The first surf reel was designed in March 1907 by members of the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club
