Forever the crowd favourite, the 2011 Arafura Games Sepak Takraw competition will again take it’s place on the Games Sporting program.

Men’s Regu and Doubles competitions will be conducted with provincial and regional teams from throughout Asia encouraged to register.

Sepak Takraw has been contested in the Arafura Games since 1993 by club, company, regional, youth and national teams from Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. The Sepak Takraw tournaments provide a high level of competition that allows teams and individuals to learn, improve and compete in an atmosphere of good sportsmanship.

About Sepak Takraw

Originating from Asia, Sepak Takraw draws on an athlete’s all round skills, combining the teamwork of volleyball, the dexterity of soccer and the finesse of badminton. The word ‘sepak’ is a Malay word meaning ‘to kick’, while ‘takraw’ in Thai means rattan or cane ball.

The game is played by two opposing “Regus”, teams with two or three players each, on a court separated by a net similar to badminton. It begins with the service, executed by a ball toss from one player to the Server. The players then try to beat their opponents inside three contacts, using only their legs and heads.

Spiking is the most dramatic move in the game for spectators, as players become acrobatic and air borne to power the ball down into the opposing team’s court.

Eligibility/Entry Standards:

Teams from all countries are welcome to submit entries. The Arafura Games particularly encourages emerging champions to participate in the Sepak Takraw competition. Internationally accredited umpires will be brought to Darwin for the tournament to ensure the highest standard of officiating.

IMPORTANT: Each team is required to supply a referee with a minimum national grading to assist with officiating throughout the tournament. Any teams not able to meet this requirement must contact the coordinator as early as possible.

Endorsement:

All teams must be endorsed by the relevant International or Regional Federation. Registration will not be finalised and accepted until endorsement is received. Endorsement information is provided at time of registration and should be gained by the appropriate organisation prior to registering any athletes to ensure there are no delays in the process.

Training at the Games venues will not be possible during the week; however the Coordinator may be able to assist you to source suitable alternate training venues if necessary.
